All the glamour of Rihanna's Savage X Fenty show at NYFW

September 2019

This year’s New York Fashion Week has delivered spectacular shows, from an array of established designers and collaborations with high profile celebrities as well as a new guard of young talents. However, the show-stopper of the week came from none other than the newly (and rightly) hailed queen of inclusivity, Rihanna.

A refreshing mix of models (Gigi and Bella Hadid, Cara Delevingne and Joan Smalls), performers (Big Sean, Normani, Halsey), dancers and non models showcased the Savage X Fenty collection.

The video streaming site, Amazon Prime, gained exclusive streaming rights to air the lingerie collection to more than 200 countries. The Amazon Prime special included a behind the scenes look at the making of the runway show.

As executive producer and creative director of the show, Rihanna worked alongside Willo Perron, who has designed many of her iconic sets, such as the BBHMM performance on SNL and the ANTI tour.

The final set design was inspired by North African and Mediterranean architecture and took an unconventional route towards being entertaining rather than just a flat, runway show.

Unlike the popular Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, the sexy intimacy and bold uniqueness of the Savage X Fenty show wasn’t about catering to the male gaze, but instead about women defining and embracing their sexiness.

An unmissable feature of Rihanna’s show was the inclusivity and diversity of the cast, bearing models of all sizes, genders, races and ethnicities, including trans women, disabled women and drag queens.

After Victoria’s Secret recieved backlash for claiming that trans women were not part of their label’s ‘fantasy’, trans models Laverne Cox, Teddy Quinlivan and Isis King powerfully dominated the Savage X Fenty set, shining a light on women who aren’t usually highlighted in the fashion industry. Furthermore, Lauren Wasser walked with prosthetic legs, giving paraplegic women the chance to feel sexy where they usually don’t.

Rihanna opened the show with her track ‘Woo’ and the incredible musical talent continued throughout with performances from Halsey, Migos, DJ Khaled, ASAP Ferg and Big Sean.

Normani has refused to take a break after her exceptional performance of Motivation at the MTV VMA’s. She modelled the Eye Heart U Unlined Bra with a sensational piece of choreography which sent twitter wild with praise and led to the bra being sold out instantly after the show.

The shoppable visual event has become one of the most talked about topics on social media and has been applauded worldwide. Rihanna expresses that the inclusivity of Savage X Fenty lies in the importance of all women feeling a sense of belonging in her collection and uses the ‘biggest platform she can give’ to reach a new and unique audience.
